Pentecost: Fire and Wind

Acts 2

1. The Sound of a Violent Wind - The Breath of God

  • Acts 2:2
  • Hebrew: Ruach
  • Genesis 1:2
  • Genesis 2:7
  • From Formless and Empty to New Creation
  • Greek Pnoe - Wind

Significance of the Violent Wind:

  • It shows the sovereign, unstoppable power of the Holy Spirit. He is not tame or polite — He moves with divine force.
  • It echoes creation — God breathing life into what was formless and empty.
  • It signals a new creation moment. Just as God breathed life into Adam, He was now breathing new spiritual life into His people.
  • Wind is invisible yet powerful. You can’t see the Holy Spirit, but you can see the effects of His presence — just like you can’t see wind, but you can see trees bending and waves rising.

The violent wind filled the whole house — not just one corner. The Holy Spirit came to fill every person present, and ultimately, to fill the entire Church.

Application for Us Today The same Holy Spirit who came as a violent wind on Pentecost wants to move powerfully in our lives and in our church. He wants to blow through areas of stagnation, fear, dryness, and complacency. He wants to bring fresh life, fresh power, and fresh direction.

Are there areas in your life that feel dry or stuck?

The Holy Spirit — the Ruach of God — still breathes life into dead places.

2. Tongues Like Flames of Fire - God's Purifying and Empowering Presence

  • Acts 2:3
  • OT Fire
    • Exodus 3:2
    • Exodus 13:21
    • Exodus 19:18
    • Leviticus 9:24
    • 1 Kings 18:38

Fire in the Old Testament was:

  • Purifying (burning away impurity)
  • Guiding (the pillar of fire)
  • Consuming / Judging (when God’s holiness met sin)
  • Approving / Accepting (fire consuming the sacrifice)

NT Importance:

  1. Personal Filling The fire did not hover over the group. It separated and rested on each one. Every believer — men, women, young, old — received the Holy Spirit personally.
  2. Purifying Presence Fire purifies. On Pentecost, God was purifying and setting apart His people for His mission. Just as fire consumed the sacrifice in the Old Testament to show acceptance, the Holy Spirit was now setting these believers apart as living sacrifices.
  3. Empowering Presence Fire gives light, heat, and energy. The Holy Spirit came as fire to empower ordinary people to do extraordinary things — to speak boldly, live holy lives, and carry the gospel to the ends of the earth.
  4. Tongues of Fire The flames looked like tongues because they would soon speak in other languages (tongues). The fire enabled them to proclaim the wonders of God in languages they had never learned.

Application for Us Today

The same Holy Spirit who came as tongues of fire on Pentecost wants to rest upon you.

  • He wants to purify your heart from sin, bitterness, fear, and distraction.
  • He wants to empower you to speak boldly about Jesus in your home, workplace, and community.
  • He wants to set you on fire so that your life becomes a living testimony of God’s presence.

Personal Reflection:

  • Are there areas in your life that need the purifying fire of the Holy Spirit?
  • Do you need fresh fire to love your family well, to serve with joy, or to speak about Jesus with courage?
  • Will you invite the Holy Spirit to rest upon you today like He did on that first Pentecost?

3. The Significance of the Upper Room - The Birth of the Church

Why the Upper Room?

  • It was a place of waiting and prayer (Acts 1:14).
  • It was a place of unity — “they were all together in one place” (Acts 2:1).
  • It was a place of ordinary people — fishermen, tax collectors, mothers, and everyday believers.

Acts 2:42-47

This is the Church at its best:

  • Devoted to teaching and fellowship
  • Generous and joyful
  • Meeting in homes and in public
  • Growing daily as the Lord added to their number

The Church didn’t start with a building or a program. It started with ordinary people filled with the Holy Spirit, living in community, and boldly proclaiming Jesus.

Leaving Questions

  • Will you commit to this fellowship? Will you be devoted to learning from the teaching of the Word?
  • Will you be generous, giving from a joyful heart to further God’s work?
  • Will you come to more than just Sundays, meet in homes, and devoted to true relationships?
  • Will you help to bring more people to Jesus through the power of His Spirit working in you?
